Visiting Kigali’s art spaces

Contemporary art gives another way to understand Kigali. Begin with the spaces that present the work and the artists they identify. A gallery visit is more useful when it leaves room for looking, reading and asking questions, rather than treating the room as a photographic backdrop.

Start with a space’s own information

Inema Arts Center describes an artist-led setting founded in 2012 by Innocent Nkurunziza and Emmanuel Nkuranga. Its own site introduces artists, exhibitions and activities. Use that information to understand the purpose of the space and to check what is currently available.

Give the work time

A few works examined carefully can create a more memorable visit than a quick circuit through every room. Read labels and artist information where provided. If staff invite questions, ask about the context of the work or the current exhibition rather than assuming every piece shares the same story.

Artists and creative spaces may have different relationships with the city, with Rwanda and with other places. Let their own accounts establish those connections. Avoid turning a varied contemporary art scene into one decorative style or a general cultural claim.

Check photography and participation separately

Admission, a workshop and permission to photograph are separate questions. Confirm the arrangements for the activity you want. If photography is permitted, ask before making a close portrait or recording a conversation, and follow any restrictions around individual works.

• Ask about photography before assuming permission.
• Keep an artist’s name with any work you are invited to share.
